So I leave in a few days and I'll be gone for almost 5 whole months. I'm taking as many products as I can but I still haven't found a whole lot that I'm completely sold on so I know I'll run out after 2 or 3 months. When that time comes I want to be prepared. Basically all I'm taking is conditioner and small bottles of avacado oil, jojoba oil, and EVOO but they won't last long. I also have glycerin because Lima is extremely humid. (SN: I scored a bottle of Yes to Tomatoes for $2.99 at Ross today! I've heard good things about Yes to Carrots and other products but they're usually $9.99 at Target).

I've come up with 2 lists:

Items I know are available and work on my hair
  • avacado/avacado oil
  • extra virgin olive oil
  • coconut oil

Items I hope are available and should work on my hair

  • mayonnaise
  • honey/syrup
  • banana
  • castor oil
  • eggs
  • coconut milk

Since I can still do wash and go's these products would mainly be used as conditioners and treatments. My hair seems to be retaining moisture alot better than it was a few months ago so as long as it stays that way I won't worry about styling and what not.

Only time will tell...

I tried the twist out again and still was not satisfied. It takes too long and I only get lack luster results. It was just a frizzy mess. So I tried bantu knots thinking it would come out better. I tested it on the front of my hair and it seemed ok... Fail on that too. My hair just looked frizzy and raggedy.

These bantu knots looked so promising. I 2 strand twisted and then wrapped them around themselves and pinned. The back is still a little short and I was getting tired so I just left it.

I slept on them and took down with EVOO on my fingers. Unfluffed still looks promising.
This is the side view. I thought maybe I was onto something...
Once I pulled them apart a little bit they just frizzed up and went all fluffy. As you can see, I'm unenthused.
I tried to salvage it and throw in a flower for distraction. It wasn't that bad but I twisted alot of chunks just for some sort of definition.

These are the twists for the twist out. Again, they look promising.

The ends were a little frizzy but it looked like something good might just happen.

The take down. Not that bad. Still had a little definition but too much frizziness.

The next day I did my fro hawk with headband and then this is 2 days later. I just threw on a scarf and it looked ok. It gave me a little more definition than just the typical wash and go.

Bottom line: I still don't think my hair is long enough. I know it takes time but I really want to master these styles. I'm at an awkward point in growth where it takes longer to detangle and dry for the wash and go's but it's not long enough to do anything else. I think I'm going to wait a month and come back to it.

My hair is still flaking but I'm happy to report that the ACV rinse was a success. I shampooed and then used the diluted mix of appple cider vinegar. It was equal parts ACV and water. I just poured it over my head and let it sit for 2 or 3 minutes. After that I deep conditioned with my whole avacado and a few drops of jojoba oil. My scalp felt cleaner and I think my hair was noticeably shinier right after the rinse. I definitely plan on doing this again, although I don't know when.

My hair is still flaky but I've noticed that it's around the sides more than the middle so it could also be the products I use. I just realized that I've been using a gel from before I started this process and it has petrolatum in it. This could be the cause of the flaking. But it's the only thing that will slick my edges down so I'll have to keep it for now.

I'm so ashamed I can't even take a picture for proof and none of the pics on line are sufficient. I have dandruff! Secretly, I'm happy becaue when I had a relaxer it usually meant that it was "growing dandruff." But it's really frustrating because it barely itches but every time I move my hair it starts snowing. I've googled it and the debate is a little heated about whether growing dandruff actually exists. All I know is that I haven't had dandruff these last few months so it's definitely something different. I guess only time will tell.

I don't want to get to Peru with a headful of dandruff (growing or otherwise) so I'm going to try a quick remedy. I've heard that apple cider vinegar rinses work well for clarifying so I'm going to try that as a cheap fix. After that I'm also going to try an avacado mask.

Oh yeah: I also will be buying and trying Palmer's Coconut Oil Hair Milk. I think it would be a good leave-in and I've also been a little frizzy. The reviews on the Long Hair Care Forum were mixed so I want to try for myself. Maybe it'll be good for the frizz and dandruff.

Nappy trails...

It's been sooo long. I don't know why this keeps happening. I've been back for over a month and I'm actually departing again in about 2 weeks. My routine was very haphazard-like while in Argentina so here is the photo summary.
I think this picture is basically how I wore my hair the whole time-just me and my afro.

I really love this faux/fro hawk inspired by fellow blogger natural chica.

I think this is going to be my signature style in the coming months.

This is like 3rd day twist out. It was still kind of coily.

Nothing new-top view.

This is the twist out right out of the twists. I had some frizz and definition problems. Not really feeling it.

This is the same day. It was shiny but I used the Carol's Daughter Some of Ms. Margeurite's Magic...it was a little oily.

Same day just after a little more fluffing.

My life saving deep conditioner- fresh AVACADO! I used a whole one for my hair and they were so cheap.

I wish I had had a mixer or something but I had to mash it in cups. I did it twice and both times my hair was so much shinier and softer. The downside: tiny avacado strings in my hair after rinsing.

This is a good texture shot after rinsing out the avacado. See my shine!
Coming soon: my plan for my hair in the coming months, products I've been using, and of course more pictures!
Nappy trails...
